Promaster Diver

From the 1982 titanium Professional Diver to the modern Promaster Diver 200m: the professional diving backbone of Citizen

Model History

The line's story begins even before the Promaster name: in 1982 Citizen presented the Professional Diver, a titanium case with declared water resistance down to 1,300 meters, designed to exclude helium during saturation dives — a genuine instrument watch, intended for professional operators rather than the mass market. In 1989 Citizen brought this heritage together under a single brand, Promaster, presented as a line "for professionals of land, sea and sky": the arrow logo, evoking the idea of "going higher, going deeper", has roots in the sporting spirit the brand had already cultivated for years. The Marine segment, dedicated to diving, immediately became one of the range's three pillars alongside Land and Sky.

The backbone of the line today is the Promaster Diver 200m: a steel case, Eco-Drive quartz movement that eliminates battery replacement, and features compliant with the ISO 6425 standard for diving watches — a unidirectional graduated bezel, luminous indexes and hands, screw-down crown, declared water resistance of 200 meters. Trade press often cites it as one of the best value-for-money options among accessible professional divers, offered in numerous dial and case variants, including the sturdy "Orca" (BN0230 series, about 46 mm), whose massive profile earned it the whale-referencing nickname in the field.

At the technical pinnacle of the same line sit models of altogether different ambition: the 2002 Promaster 1000m Professional Diver, mechanical, with a sealed helium-resistant structure designed for saturation down to 1,000 meters, and above all the 2016 Eco-Drive Professional Diver 1000m, described by Citizen as the world's first light-powered saturation diving watch. A range — from the everyday 200-meter diver to the professional saturation instrument — that few generalist brands can claim under a single line.

Fun Fact

During development of the 2016 Eco-Drive Professional Diver 1000m, Citizen attached a prototype of the model to the external basket of the Deepsea 6500 research submersible, to test its water resistance well beyond the declared depth — a rare test for a watch that, at least in its base version, is also intended for non-professional wearers.
