Type 1

The brand's founding line, with small seconds and dress-watch proportions from the 1930s-1940s

Model History

The Type 1 is the first model presented by Naoya Hida & Co. at the brand's launch, in 2019, and remains the line most identified with its founding aesthetic. The 37.5 mm steel case, Calatrava-inspired, houses a dial with small seconds positioned at 9 o'clock and Breguet-style numerals, a graphic layout that directly recalls Swiss dress watches of the first half of the twentieth century.

Over the course of the annual collections the Type 1 has been revised several times in its details — from the shape of the seconds hand to the case proportions, which grew slightly thicker in more recent executions to accommodate movement updates — while keeping its original design intact. It is the line the brand uses each year to introduce small color and finishing variants, while still keeping runs very limited.

The base movement, the automatic caliber 3019SS with 18 jewels, was chosen and finished in-house to suit the thin proportions the brand wanted, consistent with its stated philosophy of combining the aesthetic of the watchmaking golden age with a contemporary technical execution.

Fun Fact

Naoya Hida is not a trained watchmaker: before founding his own brand he spent decades working in high-end watch distribution in Japan, an experience that let him observe closely, for years, what truly made a dress watch desirable before he tried designing one himself with the Type 1.
