Runwell
Line History
The Runwell is, quite literally, the watch with which Shinola was born as a watch brand: launched in 2013, it was the first model produced in the newly born Detroit factory opened by Tom Kartsotis (previously the founder of Fossil) through his company Bedrock Manufacturing. With this reference the brand set its identity right from the start: a sturdy steel case, a "pumpkin"-colored screw-down crown, a double-domed sapphire crystal, a dial with luminescent Arabic numerals and a quartz movement — the Argonite 1069, based on Ronda components — assembled and regulated by hand at the Detroit plant.
The name belongs to a vein that Shinola has used for many of its lines: a vocabulary inspired by American railroads and industry, shared with other models of the brand such as Brakeman and Station Agent. No official source from the brand has been found that explains its exact etymology precisely, but the placement of the name within this vein of railroad-related names is documented by several independent sources; it therefore remains a reasonable hypothesis rather than a confirmed fact, and it is flagged here as such.
Over the years the Runwell line has expanded well beyond the original quartz model: automatic versions have arrived (Runwell Automatic, with a Sellita SW200 base) as well as the Station Agent variant with a Swiss automatic movement, both designed for an audience more oriented toward mechanics than the starting quartz. In 2023, for the tenth anniversary, Shinola presented a limited edition of 1,000 pieces with an exhibition case back to show the inner mechanics, black bridges and blue screws, keeping the 2013 launch price as an explicit tribute to the reference that started it all.

Main Executions
For the tenth anniversary of the Runwell, in 2023, Shinola chose to keep the same list price as the original 2013 model: a way to underline, ten years later, the continuity with the watch that had started the whole Detroit factory project.
