Line History
The Legacy Machines are born in 2011, four years after the debut of the Horological Machines, as the second great pillar of MB&F's production and as an answer to a question Maximilian Büsser had asked himself since the brand's founding: how to apply the same conceptual freedom of the Machines to a language closer to great classic watchmaking. With the LM1, the line abandons the unconventional sculptural cases of the Horological Machines to return to the round case, but without giving up the brand's three-dimensional signature: a large 14 mm "flying" balance wheel, suspended above the dial by two arcs that showcase its motion, in an explicit tribute to the great innovative watchmakers of the 19th century. The LM1 also introduces an independent dual time zone and a novel vertical power-reserve indicator, and is met with immediate recognition: in 2012 it wins both the award for best men's watch and the public prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.
In the following years the line is enriched with ever more ambitious complications while keeping its original aesthetic framework: the LM2 (2013) introduces an independent double flying balance wheel with differential, the LM101 (2014) offers a more accessible and compact version of the Legacy Machine philosophy, while the LM Perpetual (2015) incorporates an in-house perpetual calendar with new safety mechanisms against accidental manipulation, an innovation that earns it the award for best calendar watch at the 2016 GPHG. In 2019 the line reaches a symbolic milestone with the LM FlyingT, the first MB&F watch designed specifically for a female clientele: a spherical crystal, diamonds and a tilted flying tourbillon designed to be legible from the wrist of the wearer, awarded best ladies' complication at the GPHG that same year.
Since 2018 the family has expanded with the "EVO" editions: variants designed for more active everyday use, with tougher cases and integrated bracelets, that sit alongside — without replacing — the original versions of references such as the LM101, LM Perpetual and LM Split Escapement. The high point of this path comes in 2022 with the LM Sequential EVO, a chronograph of extraordinary complexity capable of running two flyback chronographs independently to time two separate events (either in sequence or in "split-seconds" mode), designed with independent watchmaker Stephen McDonnell: the watch wins the Aiguille d'Or, the GPHG's absolute and most prestigious prize, the highest recognition ever achieved by MB&F. In 2023 the line celebrates its tenth anniversary with the LMX, a series that gathers and relaunches technical elements from previous Legacy Machines in a single celebratory reference.

The Aiguille d'Or awarded to the LM Sequential EVO in 2022 is not simply one of the GPHG's many prizes, but the event's absolute top prize, given to just one watch each year among all the category winners: for an independent brand founded in 2005 with no historical heritage of its own, it represents the highest possible seal of legitimacy from the Swiss watch industry.
