Star Legacy
Model History
The Star Legacy has its roots in the Star collection, launched in 1997 when Montblanc entered the world of watchmaking: it was the first family of timepieces to carry the brand's name on the dial, conceived to unite the classic elegance of the men's watch with the culture of writing that has always distinguished the maison. Over time the line has been reorganized and relaunched as Star Legacy, with the stated aim of making more explicit the link with the watchmaking heritage accumulated by the brand, particularly after Minerva joined the group.
The most frequently cited historical reference the maison uses for this collection is that of Nicolas Rieussec, the Parisian inventor who in 1821 built for the Champs-de-Mars racecourse a device capable of recording in ink the arrival time of each horse: an ink chronograph considered among the first in history. Rieussec's name has returned several times on Montblanc dials, with chronographs that pay homage to his operating principle through rotating-disc counters instead of traditional hands.
On the aesthetic level, the Star Legacy revives the six-pointed star emblem registered in 1913, reinterpreting it on the crown, hands and, in some executions, the dial itself; a "sfumato" motif (a color gradient that spreads from the center toward the edges) recurs on dials and straps, while the calfskin strap echoes in its shape the profile of a fountain-pen nib — a design detail refined in more recent years by artistic director Marco Tomasetta. The current range includes automatic three-hand executions with day and date, a full calendar with moon phases, and Nicolas Rieussec chronographs, making the Star Legacy the broadest and most cross-cutting collection in the Montblanc catalogue.

Main Executions
In the Nicolas Rieussec chronograph, the minutes/seconds function is not read with hands rotating over a fixed dial, but with a small disc that turns beneath a stationary index — the same principle, flipped into watchmaking terms, of the ink device that Rieussec devised two centuries ago to time horse races.
