Freelancer
Collection History
Presented in 2007, the Freelancer occupies a special place in Raymond Weil's history: it is the brand's first collection not named after a musical work or form, breaking a naming tradition that had run through the catalogue since the 1980s. Born at a moment of renewal in the brand's leadership, the Freelancer is designed for a younger, more urban and sporty audience than the classic, elegant collections that had until then defined Raymond Weil's offering.
Over time the Freelancer has evolved into one of the broadest and most eclectic families in the brand's catalogue, coming to include chronograph, diver, GMT and complete-calendar versions, alongside models with a squared cushion case with rounded corners. The technical heart of the most recent range is the in-house automatic caliber RW1212, often offered in an "openworked" version with the escapement visible through the dial, alongside quartz versions designed to offer more accessible entry into the collection.
Despite its non-musical name, the Freelancer has maintained Raymond Weil's bond with the world of music over the years through collaborations and special editions dedicated to instruments and artists: since 2015, for example, the brand has partnered with Gibson, the historic guitar maker, creating limited editions of the Freelancer that reference Les Paul guitars in their design.

In 2017 Raymond Weil presented a 400-piece limited edition of the Freelancer dedicated to the Gibson Les Paul guitar, with dial indices shaped like fretboard keys, a mechanical RW5010 movement and a tachymeter bezel: a way of bringing music back to the center of a collection that, in name, had deliberately moved away from it.
