EZM (Einsatzzeitmesser)

The mission chronometers designed by Sinn for German special police and customs units

Model History

The abbreviation EZM stands for "Einsatzzeitmesser", literally "operational chronometer" or "mission chronometer". The line was born in 1997 with the EZM 1, the first watch developed by Sinn to specifications designed for special units of the German police and customs: the units that adopted it include the GSG 9 (the counter-terrorism unit of the German federal police), the KSM (naval command) and the ZUZ, the tactical support group of the federal customs authority, for which the watch was specifically conceived. About 50 examples were made for the units in question, plus a small additional batch intended for the Japanese market only.

Built in titanium with a 40 mm case and powered by the automatic Lemania 5100 caliber, the EZM 1 has the crown and pushers positioned on the left side of the case: a choice that is functional rather than aesthetic, designed to prevent these elements from coming into contact with the back of the wrist when using firearms. Production of the original model ended in 2004, with a small relaunch series of 250 pieces in 2008.

In 2017 Sinn presented the EZM 1.1, a reinterpretation in steel with Tegiment treatment, a case updated to 43 mm and the SZ01 caliber (derived from the Valjoux 7750, modified in-house), made in a limited edition of 500 pieces. Since that first chapter in 1997, the EZM family has gradually expanded with numerous other models, each designed for a specific operational field — from firefighters to deep diving to aviation units — while maintaining the same underlying principle: a watch designed starting from the concrete needs of those who use it at work.

Fun Fact

The placement of the crown and pushers on the left side of the EZM 1's case is not a stylistic whim: it responds to a very concrete need of the operators of the special units for which the watch was intended, who had to be able to wear the chronometer without these elements digging into the back of the wrist while gripping a firearm.
