Overseas

The sporty-elegant line made for travel, since its 1996 debut

History of the line

The Overseas line was officially presented in 1996 as Vacheron Constantin's response to the growing success, in those years, of steel sports watches designed for rugged everyday use without giving up the codes of haute horlogerie. The first Overseas model openly took up the legacy of reference 222, the sports watch designed in 1977 by designer Jörg Hysek to celebrate the manufacture's 222nd anniversary: from that model the new line inherited the steel case with its distinctive bezel with six bevelled sides and the idea of a bracelet integrated into the case.

The name "Overseas" was chosen to evoke a travel watch, able to accompany its wearer across different time zones and climates: a concept the manufacture has translated over the years into dedicated complications such as dual time and perpetual calendar, as well as chronograph versions. A distinctive feature that has accompanied the line since the first versions is the tool-free interchangeable strap system, which allows switching from the metal bracelet to a leather or rubber strap on the same watch.

In 2016 the line underwent a general relaunch, with a new generation of cases and in-house movements certified with the Poinçon de Genève (the Geneva hallmark of quality), confirming the Overseas as one of the most representative sporty-elegant collections in the Vacheron Constantin catalogue, alongside similar offerings from other great Geneva manufactures.

Did you know?

Ref. 222, the Overseas' spiritual ancestor, was created for the manufacture's 222nd anniversary: a rare case in which the model number itself celebrates a company anniversary, anticipating by almost twenty years the official birth of the line that would carry on its stylistic legacy.
