Elite

The ultra-thin automatic calibre presented in 1994, still the basis of Zenith's "simple" watchmaking today

Model history

The Elite project was born in the early 1990s under technical director Jean-Pierre Gerber, with the aim of giving Zenith its own thin, versatile automatic calibre, able to compete with third-party movements widely used in watchmaking at the time such as the ETA 2892-2. The work, begun in 1991, led in 1994 to the presentation at Baselworld of the first calibres in the family — including the two-hand Cal. 661, the centre-seconds Cal. 670 and the Cal. 680 with small seconds at 9 o'clock — all built around a common diameter of 11.5 lignes (25.60 mm) and a slim profile, in some versions under 4 millimetres.

The name "Elite" stems precisely from this ambition for quality: to stand out as a manufacture alternative to the base calibres widely used in the industry, while offering a thickness slim enough to leave room, in the thinnest versions such as the hand-wound Cal. 650 (2.83 mm), for added complications without making the final case too heavy. Calibres 670 and 680 were also among the very first in Zenith's history to be designed with computer-aided design (CAD), a significant technical leap for the time.

Since then the Elite family has remained the default basis for Zenith's "simple" automatic watches — three-hand, with date or small complications — while chronograph versions are left to the El Primero. In 2020 the brand presented a new generation of Elite calibres, with an Elite Classic collection that takes up its aesthetic and technical legacy with updated proportions, confirming how the 1994 project remains, more than twenty-five years on, a still-active pillar of the catalogue.

Did you know?

When it was presented in 1994, the Elite calibre was hailed as one of the most significant technical novelties of the year in the industry, precisely for its combination — then uncommon among manufacture automatic movements — of a compact diameter and a particularly slim profile.
