Classique
Model History
Unlike other Breguet collections, the Classique was not born with a precise launch date or a single founding event: it is instead the name under which the manufacture gathers, catalogue line by catalogue line, the aesthetic language defined by Abraham-Louis Breguet himself between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Round cases with coin-edge sides (inspired by the founder's pocket watches), gold dials hand-guilloché on a rose-engine lathe, "Breguet" hands ending in a hollowed moon tip (the celebrated "pomme évidée"), and Arabic or Roman numerals in the Breguet style: these are the elements that, revived on a wrist case, give shape to what is today considered the maison's purest, most recognizable expression.
It is around the Classique that Breguet concentrates much of its grand complications: tourbillons (including ultra-thin versions), perpetual calendars, minute repeaters and moon phases all find a place in this collection with an aesthetic always consistent with the original design, even when the underlying mechanics are thoroughly contemporary — silicon balance wheels, antimagnetic balance springs, hand-finishing with Côtes de Genève and hand-beveled bridges.
Alongside the most complex executions, the Classique 5177 — a 38 mm case, three hands, date, automatic calibre 777Q — remains the entry point and, at the same time, the most immediate synthesis of the house style: it is often the model collectors and experts cite first when they need to explain, with a single watch, what makes a Breguet recognizable at a glance even without reading its name on the dial.

The Classique's aesthetic DNA also traces back to the legendary Breguet No. 160, the "Marie-Antoinette": commissioned in 1783 (according to tradition by an anonymous admirer of the queen) and completed only in 1827, four years after the founder's death, it is among the most complex and celebrated pocket watches ever made, and remains a reference still cited today when discussing the most classic Breguet style.
