Breil

Founded in 1939 in Milan — today part of Gruppo Binda

Brand History

The Breil name was born in 1939 within Binda Italia, the company Innocente Binda had founded in 1906 in Besozzo, on Lake Maggiore, as a small watchmaking workshop. The chosen term is neither a family name nor a purely invented word: it is the Frenchified form of Brigels, a Romansh-speaking municipality in Swiss Grisons which in the Romansh language also bears the name "Breil". With this brand, distinct from the family name, Binda intended to give the company a watch line with a more modern and recognizable character, able to stand alongside its already established production.

In 1965 the group's headquarters moved to Milan, on Via Cusani, and Breil began building its identity as an accessible brand with a strong stylistic content. Toward the end of the 1970s the Manta diving collection debuted, carrying the Breil name for the first time beyond the strictly Italian watchmaking scene. But it was in the 1990s that the brand underwent its most radical turning point: the advertising campaign "Toglietemi tutto ma non il mio Breil" (later becoming "Don't Touch my Breil") revolutionized the industry's communication, addressing for the first time in an explicit way a young and female audience and turning the watch into an object of personal identity even before a mere timekeeping instrument.

From the early 2000s Breil expanded its reach beyond the watch, launching steel jewelry lines (including the Snake necklace, which became a cultural phenomenon) and later eyewear. The brand remains today part of Gruppo Binda, alongside other historic names in Italian watchmaking such as Wyler Vetta, Hip Hop and Chronotech, continuing to rework its historic heritage — Manta above all — with contemporary readings.

What Sets It Apart

🐟
An underwater soul
Born as a generalist brand, it found a precise sporty identity thanks to the Manta diver, inspired by the eponymous marine ray.
📣
An icon of Italian advertising
The slogan "Toglietemi tutto ma non il mio Breil" has entered everyday language, well beyond the world of watchmaking.
💍
Beyond the watch
Since the early 2000s the brand has also grown in steel jewelry and accessories, remaining a name that crosses style categories.
