U-Boat

Founded in 2000 by Italo Fontana — based in Lucca / Capannori, Tuscany

Brand history

U-Boat was born in 2000 in Lucca, Tuscany, on the initiative of Italo Fontana, who found among his family papers the sketches drawn in the 1940s by his grandfather Ilvo Fontana, a watchmaker commissioned by the Italian Navy to design wristwatches for pilots: rugged, highly legible and water-resistant. That project never reached production, but decades later Italo decided to give shape to that vision, founding a brand with the motto "A New Dimension in Time".

U-Boat is therefore not a historic watch manufacture in the classic sense, but a design brand built around a strongly military-naval aesthetic: large cases, often between 45 and 53 mm in diameter, and a crown positioned on the left side of the case, protected by a lever locking system designed — in the spirit of the original project — to remain usable even with gloves on. Production, promoted as "Made in Tuscany", is based in a country villa in the hills of Gragnano, a hamlet of Capannori, a few minutes from Lucca.

Over the years the brand has established itself in more than 60 markets worldwide with single-brand boutiques and multi-brand retailers, also building a strong pop identity: in 2024, for the Lucca Summer Festival, Italo Fontana personally gave customised watches to artists such as Rod Stewart, Duran Duran and Sam Smith. In 2025 U-Boat celebrated 25 years in business with a special edition of the Chimera line.

What sets it apart

⚓
A design brand, not a historic manufacture
The name evokes military submarines, but U-Boat was born in 2000 as a design-led watch brand inspired by military drawings from 1942, without centuries of watchmaking tradition behind it.
📏
Oversized cases, often up to 53 mm
Many models are well over 45 mm in diameter, with the stated aim of making a strong visual impact on the wrist.
🔧
Left-hand crown with lever cap
A patented hallmark: the crown, on the left side of the case, is protected by a lever locking system of military-naval inspiration.
