Hamilton

Founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (USA) — today part of the Swatch Group, headquartered in Biel, Switzerland

Brand History

Hamilton was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from the merger of several local watchmaking manufactures. From its earliest years it specialized in producing extremely precise pocket watches for the United States railroads: its first model, the 1893 Broadway Limited, was marketed as "the Watch of Railroad Accuracy," and during the years of American railroad expansion Hamilton came to cover more than half of the railroad chronometer market — instruments on which the safety of schedules and train crossings literally depended.

The bond with the US armed forces is just as central to the brand's history: as early as 1917 Hamilton converted its pocket calibers into wristwatches for wartime use, and in 1918 it began timing the first flights of the US airmail service, forging a relationship with aviation that would continue for decades. But it was with the Second World War that the military contribution became total: from 1942 to 1945 Hamilton entirely suspended civilian production to supply the Allied troops with over a million watches, including the famous Model 21 and Model 22 marine chronometers and the waterproof wristwatches issued to soldiers in the field — a commitment that earned the company five Army-Navy "E" Awards for production excellence.

In January 1957 Hamilton made a technological leap that remains its most celebrated achievement to this day: it unveiled the Ventura in New York, powered by caliber 500, the world's first electric watch — a direct forerunner of the coming quartz revolution. In 1961 that same Ventura, with its asymmetrical case designed by Richard Arbib, was worn by Elvis Presley in the film Blue Hawaii, cementing a bond with cinema that Hamilton still cultivates today with hundreds of appearances in Hollywood films, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Interstellar, earning it the informal nickname "the Movie Brand."

1969 marked the closure of the historic Lancaster plant, and in 1974 the brand was sold to SSIH, later absorbed into the Swatch Group: since then Hamilton has operated as a Swiss manufacture headquartered in Biel, while still explicitly claiming, through the motto "American Spirit, Swiss Precision," its dual heritage of American origin and Swiss-made production.
